Sarasota, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2023)–Following the success of its LEGO Robotics classes earlier this year, the Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab is upping the ante and unveiling a new LEGO RoboRumble robotics program specially designed for elementary school children.
The program is open to traditional and homeschool students in grades 1-5. The registration fee is $330 and includes six weeks of build classes. During the classes, children learn how to design and build a robot using LEGO robotics kits. Additionally, they will learn how to program their robot for battle using the Scratch programming language.
The registration fee also includes entry into an action-packed RoboRumble competition scheduled for December 17. This competition allows students to showcase their hard work and pit their robots against others for fun prizes.
Classes for traditional school students begin on October 15 and are held on Sundays. The schedule is from 9am to 12pm for 1st-3rd grade students and from 1pm to 4pm for 4th-5th grade students. For homeschool students, classes occur on Tuesdays beginning October 17, with the same time slots as traditional school students. Please note that interested individuals must purchase the full six-class package to participate in the program. Registration is now open at https://suncoastscience.org/lego. Fab Lab programs sell out quickly, so don’t wait to grab your spot!
The LEGO RoboRumble program is led by April Pan, Fab Lab Robotics Director. She boasts an impressive track record, having coached multiple FIRST® LEGO® League teams to victory, including securing the coveted 2021-2022 first-place LEGO Robotics Design award in Florida and the title of FIRST® Global Innovation Award semifinalist in the same year. Additionally, 16 high school students make up the RoboRumble committee, a leadership position that empowers them to develop key technical and life skills as they assist children with building their robots.
